Bonnett, Wayne

Hello, my name is Wayne Bonnett and I am standing for the board of trustees for Rangiora High School. My wife Rianne and I have lived in Amberley for 12 years where we run a motel business and spend our spare time playing tennis for the Amberley tennis club. I have one daughter at Rangiora, Lana who is currently in year 12 and who really enjoys the academic challenges and sporting and cultural opportunities the school has to offer. I am currently on the Board of Trustees at Rangiora High School and I am the chairperson of the Finance and Property committee. In my short time at the school I have seen positive changes for the school, namely the appointment of an Associate Principal to oversee the improvement in our curriculum as well as develop strategy on how to increase academic excellence at the school. There has been an appointment of a Business Manager to manage the complexity of school property and to ensure the school delivers within budget. The school has also received a favourable ERO report so I am confident that the school is heading in the right direction. My professional background is in education and I am a Chartered Accountant. I am currently the Chief Financial Officer at CORE Education. CORE is a provider of professional development to primary and secondary school teachers and has numerous contracts with the Ministry of Education and is a national based charitable trust. My previous position (13 years) was as a regional Finance Director for Kaplan International Colleges where I was responsible for the financial direction for eight language schools based in Australia and New Zealand. Therefore I do have commercial experience within the private and public sectors. I would like to stand for another term to build on the success that the current board has achieved as there is unfinished business, namely the investment direction for the school, the decisions required around our building programmes but most importantly I want to see our children achieve to the best of their ability in a safe and successful environment.

Thank you for considering my application.

Elected

My name is Ben Prain and I am standing for the Rangiora High School Board. It has been a real privilege to have been on the Board for the last 18 months, and I would like to stand again, for a three year term. The School has made real progress since the last election, and I would really welcome the opportunity to carry on the great work started. The Principal and all of the staff have been making huge efforts to make Rangiora High the very best school it can be for your children, and progress is being made. The past 18 months has highlighted to me the huge commitment all staff have made to educating our children, and the role of the Board is to support their efforts, and hold the team accountable for the results we all want – well educated, well rounded young adults, who can live up to the school values, Aspire, Contribute and Respect. A bit about me, I have been involved with the School for the past 5 ½ years, with one son now finished, and two more to go. The Prain family moved to North Canterbury in 2010, having lived in various parts of NZ, I can safely say North Canterbury is the place for us. My working background involves 20 years in Agribusiness and Finance in various corporate roles. My current role is leading the Rural and Business lending teams for a NZ owned Bank. I believe my skills and experience complement the requirements of the School Board. In our spare time the whole Prain family are heavily involved in sport in North Canterbury, from playing to coaching, cheering on the side line, and helping administer various clubs. We live on a lifestyle block, and understand we are all fortunate in North Canterbury to have a fantastic natural environment literally on our doorstep. I believe in getting involved in things I’m passionate about, and helping young people achieve their potential is definitely one of those things. Again I would welcome the chance to work with the Principal and the new Board to continue developing the strong governance of the school, and to take on the many exciting challenges, including continued improvement in the educational outcomes for all our students. Thanks again for considering my nomination.
